Starting next week, free and Go users of OpenAI's ChatGPT can have unlimited text chats with the chatbot, according to the company. Currently, these users may encounter rate limits if they engage in too many text chats. However, those limits for text-based interactions will soon be eliminated.

New GPT-5.6 Luna Model

The new GPT-5.6 Luna model will power this experience and will be the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5. Both users will also get a new “Think” button that lets them select higher reasoning power for complex questions.

Separate Limits for Other Features

OpenAI clarified that there will still be separate limits for files, images, voice, and image generation. Plus and Pro users will also gain access to an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model that’s better for quick tasks such as questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and making decisions.

Enhanced Features for Plus and Pro Users

For Plus and Pro subscribers, GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT is being updated to be “more reliable with facts,” according to OpenAI. The new GPT-5.6 Sol is designed to make fewer mistakes — especially when answers depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions — compared to its predecessor, GPT-5.5-Instant.

Next Steps

Next week, OpenAI is also adding a “Think” button for free and Go users that they can use to “access higher reasoning for harder questions.” This week, for those users, the company is additionally upgrading ChatGPT’s default AI model to the recently-released GPT-5.6 Luna.
