Kalshi launched a biotech pilot on Tuesday, offering 13 contracts for wagers on the outcomes of late-stage clinical drug trials and regulatory decisions. The new platform allows users to bet on whether certain drugs will receive approval or fail to meet trial endpoints.

The contracts cover a range of high-profile drugs currently in Phase III trials, as well as regulatory decisions by the FDA and EMA. Kalshi will offer both binary and multi-outcome bets, with payouts based on the actual results.

Kalshi CEO Madison Muller said the company aims to provide a transparent and regulated marketplace for biotech outcomes. "Our platform gives investors a new way to gain exposure to the biotech sector and participate in the drug approval process," Muller said.

Betting on Kalshi's biotech contracts is available immediately through the Kalshi API and web platform. Pricing varies based on the contract and ranges from $0.01 to $10 per bet. Kalshi charges a 1% fee on all winning bets.

Technical details

Kalshi's platform uses a secure and transparent system to ensure accurate and timely payouts. The company has implemented measures to prevent market manipulation and ensure fair play.

Independent reaction

Coverage cites several biotech industry insiders who welcomed the new platform. "This could open up a new revenue stream for biotech companies and give investors more opportunities," said one industry executive.

However, some regulatory experts expressed concerns about the potential for market manipulation and lack of investor protections. "We need to ensure this new market is properly regulated to protect all participants," said a former FDA official.

Open questions

The Kalshi announcement did not provide details on the specific drugs and regulatory decisions covered by the initial contracts. The company declined to answer questions on those points when contacted by Bloomberg.
