Cognition CEO denies SpaceX acquisition report

Elon Musk’s SpaceX reportedly attempted to acquire AI coding startup Cognition, as it races to catch up to rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic in enterprise AI. However, Cognition CEO Scott Wu disputed the report, stating on X that the story was inaccurate and that Cognition “is not for sale,” adding that the two companies haven’t been in talks.

SpaceX's AI Ambitions

SpaceX has sold investors on its AI ambitions, which include eventually building data centers in space. But the xAI business remains relatively early-stage and has fallen behind competitors. It’s also had to contend with its chatbot Grok’s penchant for controversy, including last year’s “MechaHitler” incident and this year’s nonconsensual sexual imagery scandals, as it tries to win over enterprise customers.

Cognition's Stance

Cognition CEO Scott Wu took to X to refute the acquisition report, emphasizing that the company is not for sale and that no talks have occurred with SpaceX. This comes shortly after SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, another AI coding startup, whose deal closed last week.

The report highlights the competitive dynamics in the AI race, with major players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon also vying for dominance. SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor and rumored interest in Cognition underscore the strategic importance of AI coding startups in this landscape.
