Opus 5: Enhanced Capabilities

Opus 5, while smaller than Fable 5, offers similar capabilities at a lower cost and with fewer restrictions. According to Anthropic, Opus 5 outperforms Fable 5 on several benchmarks and is free from the 30-day data retention policy that affects Fable and Mythos.

Cybersecurity Enhancements

Following recent cybersecurity concerns raised by the US government, Anthropic has integrated additional safeguards into Opus 5. This model is better equipped to handle complex coding tasks and is more robust against potential cyber threats.

Release Timeline

Opus 5 was released just two months after Opus 4.8, which became available on May 28. Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Sonnet 5 were all launched in June, leaving only the Haiku model waiting for an upgrade to the 5 series.

  • Opus 5 Release Date: July 24, 2026
  • Previous Release: Opus 4.8 on May 28, 2026
  • Other Models: Mythos 5, Fable 5, and Sonnet 5 launched in June 2026

"Opus 5 is much stronger at verifying its work and iterating carefully until it succeeds," Anthropic stated in their release.

Anthropic's release announcement highlights the model's improved capabilities and enhanced cybersecurity measures.
